About The Position

The Safety and Security Officer performs essential functions in support of the University’s mission to provide a safe and secure campus environment. This position is primarily responsible for proactive patrol operations and responding to service calls, emergencies, and incidents. Officers conduct foot and vehicle patrols, provide campus services such as escorts and vehicle assists, manage building access, and complete incident and accident reports. The role includes identifying safety hazards, monitoring suspicious or criminal activity, and supporting emergency response efforts in coordination with campus and municipal partners. This position also requires the ability to perform dispatch functions, including operating computerized systems and monitoring alarm platforms. This is an unarmed, non-commissioned position.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with computer systems and technology.
  • Ability to work effectively within a diverse campus community; commitment to inclusive excellence.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Ohio driver’s license and meet insurability requirements.
  • Successful completion of a background check is required.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
  • Must be physically capable of performing patrol duties, including walking extended distances and navigating stairs.
  • This position is unarmed; employees may not carry any unauthorized weapons.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce University rules and regulations to ensure the orderly and safe operation of campus.
  • Exercise authority consistent with the responsibilities of the position while maintaining accountability to supervisory personnel.
  • Maintain professional, courteous, and cooperative relationships with campus community members and external partners.
  • Comply with all University policies, including the Baldwin Wallace Community Standards of Conduct.
  • Patrol campus buildings, grounds, and adjacent areas via foot and vehicle patrol.
  • Respond promptly to calls for service, emergencies, alarms, and incidents.
  • Identify and report criminal activity, safety hazards, and disturbances; complete all required documentation and reports.
  • Process lost and found property, evidence, and contraband in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Monitor and document daily activity, including logging patrol activity and status updates.
  • Control building access, including locking/unlocking doors and monitoring card access systems.
  • Fulfill “Card Access Patrol” and audit responsibilities.
  • Remain actively engaged in patrol operations, limiting time in the office to essential duties, supervisor direction, or scheduled breaks.
  • Assist in emergency management operations and coordinate with local law enforcement, fire, and EMS agencies.
  • Perform dispatch functions as needed, including monitoring alarms and utilizing computer-based systems.
  • Provide court testimony as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors or the Director of Safety and Security.
