About The Position

The Virginia Spaceport Authority Internship Program offers students the chance to apply their education to real-world challenges through meaningful, hands-on projects. Top candidates are well-rounded students from a variety of backgrounds who demonstrate inquisitiveness, team-orientation, excellence, and resilience. At the time of application, candidates must be degree-seeking students enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited educational institution on at least a half-time basis. This position is located within the Safety and Quality Department of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport and supports safety and quality programs within a technical and operations environment related to Spaceport activities, including rocket launch and unmanned aircraft systems, and support functions such as operations, engineering, and logistics.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in an Associate's or Bachelor's Degree program from an accredited college or university.
  • Major in a Safety and Quality related field.
  • Valid driver's license is necessary when operating a vehicle while on agency business.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret regulatory requirements and technical journals.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries from members of the business community.
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management and public groups.
  • Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively with other agency staff and vendors.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Ability to participate in short and long-range planning for the agency.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain eligibility for issuance of a NASA credential.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug test.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in operations, learn safety training and implementation, institutional safety, and programmatic safety with an overview of how the department supports the overall mission of the Spaceport.
  • Review program documents and regulations adhering to OSHA and FAA.
  • Address environmental standards to environmental aspects such as water permits and hazardous waste efforts.
  • Engage with AS9100 and quality control.
  • Understand system safety, including high pressure and medium pressure systems, and other hazardous systems and chemicals utilized in launch functions.
  • Become familiar with facility safety and maintenance/testing of fire extinguisher/first aid kit/spill kit/eyewash.
  • Conduct real-time assessment of hazards in the field and during hazardous operations.
  • Support outdoor work in a hazardous industrial environment, including work hours outside the normal shift.
