About The Position

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is looking for an engineer to join the Vehicle Development and Technology Team of the Safety Integration Department. The Safety and Crashworthiness Performance Engineer would support pre-SOP safety-related vehicle development activities, including planning, executing, and analyzing safety-related tests to qualify new vehicle models for release in the North American market by meeting safety rating standards/targets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biomechanical, mechanical, or a related field of engineering
  • Professional experience in planning, coordinating, and executing full vehicle and component-level crash tests (i.e., frontal, side, rear, rollover, static, and subsystem tests)
  • Experience in analyzing crash test data (i.e., structural and occupant)
  • Experience analyzing and/or performing structural crashworthiness and occupant-safety simulations (e.g., frontal, side, rear, rollover, pedestrian protection, etc.)
  • Strong knowledge in automotive structure, crashworthiness, and safety performance
  • Strong knowledge of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), NCAP, and IIHS safety evaluations
  • Experience using data analysis tools (e.g., DIAdem, Hyperworks, etc.) for testing purposes
  • Knowledge of testing, test equipment, and the processes necessary to meet vehicle safety requirements
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to explain technical topics to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Flexibility with program and process changes, as Hyundai/Kia/Genesis is willing to make late changes to satisfy customer needs
  • Excellent time management, self-management, and organization skills
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills
  • Project management experience

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute full vehicle and component-level crash tests (i.e., frontal, side, rear, rollover, static, and subsystem tests)
  • Develop detailed test plans, procedures, instrumentation layouts, and data acquisition requirements
  • Oversee test preparation, including vehicle builds, sensor installation, dummy preparation, and facility readiness
  • Analyze crash test data, videos, and high-speed measurements to evaluate structural performance, occupant injury metrics, and safety system functionality
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and engineering recommendations to support design improvements
  • Contribute to best practices, test methodology improvements, and new test capabilities
  • Collaborate with CAE team(s) to correlate simulation results with physical test outcomes
  • Support the development of future models by identifying safety risks and proposing countermeasures
  • Ensure compliance with global regulatory and consumer test standards (e.g., FMVSS, NCAP, IIHS, CMVSS, etc.)
  • Manage communication with internal and external stakeholders, including proving grounds, suppliers, and safety rating agencies
  • Maintain documentation, test records, and quality systems for auditing and traceability purposes
