About The Position

Block by Block employs Ambassadors to make public spaces friendlier, safer, and cleaner for the communities they serve. The Safety Ambassador patrols an assigned zone on foot and/or by bike, helps pedestrians and visitors, and reports unwanted behavior or possible criminal activity to local authorities using established communication methods. The role also includes engaging with local businesses, requesting compliance with low-level quality-of-life rules, and completing basic daily reports. The employee must be able to accommodate shifts until 2:00 a.m. and work outdoors in all conditions.

Requirements

• Experience is required; training will be provided.
• Valid Connecticut Security License required.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must be able to walk or traverse, including by bike, continuously during an eight-hour shift, with two 15-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch break.
• Must be able to work outdoors in all conditions.
• Must be proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to create basic reports.
• Must be able to accommodate shifts until 2:00 a.m.

Responsibilities

• Patrol the assigned zone on foot and/or by bike to deter unwanted behavior and watch for concerning activity.
• Provide information, assistance, and directions to pedestrians and visitors while maintaining a positive, professional demeanor.
• Watch for unwanted behavior or criminal activity and report it to local authorities through established communication methods.
• Accurately describe people, vehicles, and other identifiers when reporting incidents.
• Firmly and courteously request compliance from people violating low-level quality-of-life rules, including rules related to panhandling, loitering, and disruptive behavior.
• Greet and engage pedestrians to provide directions and city information.
• Visit a specified number of businesses in the zone to share information and gather contact information.
• Complete basic daily reports of tasks performed.
