Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all initial Emergency Response at Canfor Pulp facilities, including Fire, First Aid, Rescue, and Hazmat. The Safety Team operates as the Incident Command, and all ERC related support flows through the Advisor. The Safety Advisor is the first point of contact for external supports like the Prince George Fire Department, BCEHS, and RCMP.
  • Responsible for the periodic inspections, maintenance, and inventory of all Emergency Response equipment, including those related to Fire, First Aid, Rescue, and Hazmat.
  • Leads the Emergency Response Crew at each site, including conducting training, providing training plans, ensuring proficiency, monitoring equipment, and leading the ERC in the event of an Emergency.
  • Manages the Evacuation Program, including accountability for employees, contractors, and visitors (sign-in), conducting drills, performing audits, and providing training.
  • Oversees the Confined Space Entry (CSE) Program, which involves testing, auditing, training, implementation, and review. The Safety Advisor is responsible for reviewing and approving CSE entry permits as requested by operations.
  • Develops and implements rescue plans for Confined Space Entry (CSE) and Fall Protection.
  • Responsible for regulatory Fire Protection Inspections, including but not limited to Sprinkler Inspections, Fire OS&Y/Valve Inspections, PIV Inspections. The Advisor is to relay any concerns or deficiencies to the appropriate site personnel to ensure rectification.
  • Manages the Marsh Impairment Program and online impairment submissions, including Fire Sprinkler, Valve, and Alarm inspections – return to service.
  • Responsible for Fire Main Flushing, Fire Hydrant Flushing and capacity testing, Fire Hose Testing, Fire Extinguisher Inspections, Replacement and Inventory, Fire Hose Station Inspection Replacement and Inventory, Fire Pump Run Ups and Monitoring.
  • Administers the Hot Work Program, including permit program issuing and collection, as well as regular audits of the program.
  • Responsible for PGFRS (City Fire) Inspection Deficiency Reporting and audit follow-up.
  • Responds to all illness and injury incidents at CPL, providing medical aid, treatment, recommendations, and elevating care when necessary. The Safety Advisor is also responsible for documenting all first aid-related incidents into Enablon and participating in follow-up investigations as needed.
  • Participates in incident investigations alongside operations, maintenance, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Administers and executes safety initiatives and programs at CPL, including providing training to employees on these programs (e.g., AED installations).
  • Conducts periodic safety audits, including but not limited to Confined Space Entry, Dust, Fire, Hot Work, Guarding, and PPE.
  • Oversees respiratory protection programs across facilities, including coordinating annual tests, weekly and monthly SCBA inspections, ISCBA training, and fit testing.
  • Manages heat stress testing in facilities, including reporting and establishing work/rest ratios.
  • Conducts area gas sweeps as required by operations, including detecting the type of gas, measuring gas levels, and assessing the overall extent of the suspected gas. The Safety Advisor is responsible for completing the Gas Incident Report and sharing findings with the requestor and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Oversees the Gas Detector Program, which includes employee training, gas detector calibration and testing, and managing employee sign-outs.
  • Oversees the audiometric program, coordinating and delivering audiometric testing across the facilities.
  • Conducts periodic sound level testing and area audits.
  • Handles visitor and general inquiries during off-shifts, manages chemical deliveries, truck scaling, material removal, the tool loan program, parking passes, alarm monitoring, OT meals, and other related tasks.
  • Coordinates and administers Insurance (Marsh) Underwriter Inspections, including loss prevention recommendations, BLRB Audit Program, Fire Pump Testing, Hydrant Flow Testing, and the impairment program.
