The Route Driver operates company vehicles and equipment safely and professionally to deliver products to customers on schedule. The role includes completing required paperwork and providing customer service at store locations. Drivers use electronic logging devices and comply with Department of Transportation and company requirements for hours of service, inspections, logging, and drug and alcohol testing. If the electronic logging system fails, drivers must complete a paper log. Drivers submit daily bids for scheduled workdays and respond to dispatcher call times for AM or PM routes to select available work. Departure times may vary, and some routes may require an overnight layover. At customer locations, drivers handle product placement, check-in, credits, temperature-trip requirements, returns, and related paperwork. They also manage contract shipments and backhauls, including checking counts and temperatures, tagging pallets, reporting discrepancies, and completing paperwork. The position involves heavy work, extended periods of sitting, and physical activity including walking, lifting, carrying, handling, driving, pushing, and pulling. Drivers may be exposed to cold temperatures in coolers and reefer units as well as varied weather conditions. A neat and clean appearance is required, and the PDI uniform must be worn while driving. Pre-employment requirements include a physical, drug screen, lift test, and background check. PDI is a drug-free workplace and conducts a post-offer drug screen.
