About The Position

The ROTC Instructor is responsible for planning, teaching, and evaluating instruction in JROTC subjects, providing educational opportunities, and extracurricular activities for students, including character education and service learning. The role involves teaching, advising, and coaching JROTC cadets to help them reach their full potential, while maintaining a viable JROTC program with a minimum enrollment of 100 students.

Requirements

  • Retired Commissioned Officer, Warrant Officer, or Non-Commissioned Officer as required by the vacant position.
  • Certified as a JROTC instructor by appropriate military service.
  • Baccalaureate degree (for Commissioned or Warrant Officers) or Associates degree (for Non-Commissioned Officers).
  • Must maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License throughout employment.
  • Proficiency in military staff and leadership procedures.
  • Ability to organize and work independently.
  • Commitment to the success of and care for students, and ability to actively involve students in learning.
  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks, perform under deadlines, and work in a calm and efficient manner.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and written.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a Supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Administer the high school JROTC program in accordance with applicable military service regulations and district policies.
  • Administer a multi-subject four-year JROTC curriculum, including planning, organizing, and instructing JROTC education classes, developing annual, weekly, and daily training schedules, and writing/updating daily lesson plans.
  • Maintain military and school property, including managing logistical areas, requisitioning supplies, equipment, uniforms, and textbooks, and maintaining accountability and serviceability of all issued property.
  • Promote program growth by establishing rapport with school counselors and faculty, contacting civic groups for support, maintaining relationships with parents/guardians, counseling students about JROTC benefits, informing cadets about military scholarship opportunities, and assisting with applications.
  • Plan and conduct co-curricular and extracurricular activities, including Color guards, drill teams, orienteering teams, raider challenge teams, and participation in field trips and competitive events.
  • Supervise JROTC cadets at leadership camps, orientation trips, adventure training, fund raisers, and other extra-curricular activities.
  • Participate in district events such as the Wichita City League Drill Competition, Veterans Day Ceremony, National Awards Ceremony, Monthly JROTC Instructors Meetings, and the Honorary Cadet Selection Program.
  • Complete an annual Continuous Growth Plan in accordance with the district Staff Quality Improvement System.
  • Plan, organize, and direct JROTC unit organization.
  • Maintain liaison with the appropriate service branch by attending conferences and workshops, and staying current on changes and developments within the service branch.
  • Attend monthly district JROTC meetings.
  • Meet deadlines and submit required military service and district reports.
  • Accept assignments related to JROTC as requested by the building principal and the district JROTC Director.
  • Assist with additional duties as assigned by the building principal or JROTC Director.
