Requirements

  • Ability to inspect returned rolls from external processing.
  • Experience monitoring cooling lubricant concentration, pH, nitrite ion, bacteria/fungi.
  • Proficiency in recording test results and inputting data into computer systems.
  • Ability to report maintenance job orders.
  • Experience instructing new workers.

Responsibilities

  • Sets up, operates, maintains, and monitors the grinding of work rolls and back up rolls for the cold rolling mill and temper mill operations.
  • Reads roll schedules, production schedules and work orders to determine processing sequences and roll requirements.
  • Positions work rolls and back up rolls on the grinding machines using crane, chain hoists or grabs.
  • Monitors process information while the product is being ground to ensure that the product achieves the desired surface finish.
  • Records data from the operator screen for Quality Assurance purposes to ensure that the rolls have attained specifications.
  • Adjusts controls to maintain grinding quality, utilizing output from operator control screens.
  • Moves controls to adjust grinding speed, traverse speed and coolant flow to achieve the required roll surface finish without defects.
  • Changes and sets up new grinding wheels or changes grinding wheels depending on the type of finish required on the roll schedule.
  • Repairs, replaces, and maintains grinding equipment as needed, using hand tools.
  • Places finished rolls in the appropriate storage racks, using crane, chain hoists or grabs, or signaling crane operators to transport them to subsequent stations.
  • Examines finished rolls to ensure that the rolls conform to specifications, utilizing knowledge of grinding and placing any suspect rolls on hold for quality control/inspection.
  • Tests finished work rolls and back up rolls for hardness, concentricity, surface defects and roughness, using testing equipment.
  • Applies anti-corrosion protection to finished rolls.
  • Prints and attaches identification tags on finished rolls for transfer to the correct cost center and for tracking purposes.
  • Records details of roll IDs, diameter, crown, surface measurements and marking the rolls accordingly.
  • Identifies rolls using standard system for tracking to ensure that rolls are specific to cost centers.
  • Prepares the rolls for transport to the cold rolling/temper mills.
  • Transports the rolls to the cold rolling/temper mill stocking areas.
  • Undertakes bearing maintenance, rotation, and lubrication as per bearing maintenance schedule.
  • Undertakes chock maintenance, rotation, and lubrication as per chock maintenance schedule.
  • Receives inspection of new rolls, ensuring new rolls conform to specifications and are free from defects.
  • Prepares rolls for external processing (EDT and Chrome Plating), packing the rolls accordingly, loading and unloading trucks.
  • Inspects returned rolls from external processing, checking that rolls conform to specifications.
  • Monitors cooling lubricant concentration, pH and the nitrite ion (weekly), bacteria/fungi (monthly), determined by standard tests.
  • Records the coolant test results, inputting data into the roll shop computer system.
  • Reports maintenance job orders, as necessary.
  • Instructs new workers in roll grinding operations.
  • Communicates with co-workers in the annealing and rolling departments to make decisions concerning production and quality requirements.
