About The Position

Weave is seeking a software engineer with strong robotics fundamentals to develop algorithms and systems for robots operating in real customer homes. The role focuses on localization, motion planning, and autonomy, as well as the architecture connecting these capabilities. Work spans mathematical modeling, algorithm development, sensor integration, and system validation. The engineer will make thoughtful design decisions and carry ideas from formulation through implementation and measured performance on physical robots. The role offers opportunities to investigate new methods and deepen expertise, with success measured by what the robots can reliably do.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience implementing and testing algorithms on physical systems and addressing the gap between theoretical formulations and imperfect hardware.
  • Strong foundations in linear algebra, coordinate transformations, probability, and numerical optimization, including the ability to reason about uncertainty, assumptions, and failure modes.
  • Substantial experience in a core robotics discipline such as state estimation, sensor fusion, SLAM, motion planning, trajectory optimization, or control, and interest in adjacent areas.
  • Understanding of the principles behind robotics methods used; relevant methods may include Kalman or particle filtering, factor graphs, bundle adjustment, graph search, constrained optimization, or model predictive control.
  • Experience implementing algorithms in C++ and using Python or similar tools for experimentation and analysis.
  • Experience contributing to maintainable software within a team.
  • Ability to design informative experiments, compare results against ground truth or other meaningful references, and distinguish algorithmic limitations from integration or sensor problems.
  • Curiosity and ownership, including willingness to investigate unfamiliar parts of a system and carry problems through to tested solutions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience integrating multiple sensor modalities, including cameras, IMUs, wheel encoders, LiDAR, or radar.
  • Experience with sensor characterization, calibration, system identification, or parameter estimation.
  • Experience deploying algorithms under onboard compute, power, or latency constraints.
  • Familiarity with ROS or ROS 2.
  • Experience with mobile robots or mobile manipulators.
  • Experience evaluating learned methods for perception, estimation, or planning.

Responsibilities

  • Develop localization and state-estimation algorithms that combine IMUs, cameras, wheel odometry, and other measurements to estimate robot motion and maintain reliable localization.
  • Analyze robot trajectories and develop motion-planning algorithms that account for geometry, kinematics, obstacles, and execution constraints.
  • Make system-level decisions about computation, timing, data flow, and component responsibilities.
  • Define metrics and validation methods to assess accuracy, latency, robustness, and overall system behavior.
  • Assess research in AI and robotics, evaluate emerging autonomy architectures, and integrate promising approaches where they improve robot capabilities and reliability.
  • Integrate and characterize sensors, manage calibration and synchronization, and account for how hardware limitations and environmental conditions affect algorithm performance.
  • Design maintainable C++ and Python software, clear interfaces, and reliable communication across the robotics stack, using ROS 2 and other frameworks or custom infrastructure as appropriate.
