Robotics Software Engineer

Aurelius Systems•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Aurelius Systems is a VC-backed defense tech startup focused on building autonomous, edge-deployed directed energy systems for counter-UAS. We are developing laser weapons to neutralize drones. Our team comprises engineers, former US military operators, and subject matter experts dedicated to advancing America's directed energy capabilities. We aim to create the first cost-effective, reliable, and robust laser weapon system. Our operational philosophy, inspired by Marcus Aurelius and Henry Ford, emphasizes focused execution, high output, and direct problem-solving. With a lab in San Francisco and a manufacturing hub in Detroit, we conduct weekly field tests on our private 400-acre range. We are seeking a Robotics Software Engineer to contribute to the Archimedes stack, transforming raw sensor data into real-time tracking, control, and autonomy systems where performance and accuracy are paramount. The role offers significant growth potential, mirroring the career trajectory of our Lead Software Engineer who advanced from Founding Robotics Engineer to Lead in 12 months.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience writing production C++ for real hardware or real-time systems.
  • Comfort working at a low level of abstraction, including threading, concurrency, memory management, and performance profiling.
  • Proven ability to implement systems, not just design them, with a track record of shipped code.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and become effective in new domains within months.
  • Experience where latency or timing was critical and measured.
  • Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident, or certain protected classes of asylees and refugees).

Nice To Haves

  • ROS2 experience (though the company has moved beyond it).
  • Experience with Rust or other systems languages.
  • Sensor integration and calibration.
  • Real-time Linux experience.
  • Projects touching motion planning, dynamics, trajectory optimization, or state estimation.

Responsibilities

  • Production C++ development across the entire stack: sensor ingestion, tracking, control, and autonomy.
  • Direct work with drivers and raw sensor data.
  • Development of threading, process architecture, and performance optimization for owned paths.
  • Timing and latency analysis and implementation of necessary fixes.
  • Creation of Python tooling for testing, analysis, and range operations.
  • Debugging on hardware during weekly field tests.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity
  • United Health Care medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Flexible 18 days PTO plus 5 sick days
  • Travel to field test events and range days
  • Covered daily lunches and office snacks and drinks
  • E-bike and scooter stipend up to $500
  • Direct access to leadership and real ownership over your work
