About The Position

Magna Corporate R&D in Toronto is seeking a talented, visionary, and self-motivated Robotics Engineering Co-op student to join the Advanced Robotics Group for a 12–16-month term (PEY). As part of Magna Corporate R&D’s Advanced Manufacturing Department, the Robotics Group is dedicated to creating new automation solutions that enhance overall efficiencies through advanced robotic technologies. The ideal candidate is an MS/MEng or a minimum third-year BS/BEng student in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or a similar engineering discipline with a focus on robotics. They have experience with ROS(2), robotic programming and controls, and initial exposure to validation processes for the functional and reliability evaluation of complex robotic systems. Additionally, the candidate should possess some experience in machine vision/image analysis, tactile perception, and/or sensor fusion techniques for task automation. The successful candidate will work in a culture that fosters creativity and problem-solving. This position is crucial to the Advanced Robotics Group and will be part of a tightly knit development team that creates advanced manufacturing solutions for the future.

Requirements

  • MS/MEng or a minimum third-year BS/BEng student in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or a similar engineering discipline with a focus on robotics.
  • Capabilities in ROS and Python programming; experience with other programming languages such as C/C++ and familiarity with NVIDIA’s ISAAC Robotics & Omniverse Framework are considered assets.
  • Initial experience working with robotic control systems, PLCs, and related communication interfaces.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML methods, particularly for computer vision tasks and tactile sensing.
  • Understanding of motion planning, actuators, kinematics, etc.
  • Creative and self-motivated, with the ability to understand and divide a vision into prioritized tasks.
  • Able to work independently on assigned tasks under supervision.
  • Ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways.
  • Excellent written (e.g., white papers) and oral (e.g., presentations) communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to operating the newly built Advanced Robotics Lab at the Magna Innovation Campus Toronto, including communication with internal and external stakeholders and the development of test and validation plans, including resources and materials.
  • Work on the definition, technical feasibility analysis, and hardware and software specification of test solutions applicable to various advanced robotic technologies, including object recognition, machine vision, motion planning, tactile perception, and dexterity.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering, product management, and/or program management teams to drive new product development programs from concept to production.
  • Understand system requirements, work with the team to establish and validate operational windows, design experiments, and define test plans.
  • Implement test systems, including proposing appropriate hardware (e.g., fixtures, sensors, actuators) and interfacing electrical or computer systems (e.g., data acquisition systems).
  • Execute test plans, collect test data, perform data analysis, and report and present the results.
  • Attend technical conferences and stay connected with academic developments to learn new tools and methodologies and stay up to date on market and technical trends.
  • Comply with designated ISO/TS 16949 responsibilities, Health & Safety (H&S) rules and practices, and Magna policies, procedures, and practices.

Benefits

  • The compensation range for this position is $24.50 to $28.50 per hour.
