Robotics Engineer (Fuse Corp)

Fuse•San Leandro, CA
•$125,000 - $165,000•Onsite

About The Position

Fuse is seeking robotics engineers to establish and grow its robotic manufacturing capability. The role designs, builds, programs, deploys, and maintains robotic cells for the lifecycle of pulsed-power hardware, from individual components to complete Impedance-Matched Marx Generator (IMG) modules. Responsibilities span robot selection, end-effector and fixture design, control and vision software, system integration, and ongoing production support. The engineer works closely with pulsed-power, mechanical, and electrical engineers to make hardware manufacturable by robots. The position is based at Fuse’s San Leandro, California facility and is fully onsite. It involves hands-on work in laboratory and production settings around high-voltage and high-energy equipment, with strict safety procedures, occasional travel to other Fuse locations, and lifting or maneuvering equipment and tooling as needed. Applicants must meet the stated U.S. technology export-control eligibility requirements.

Requirements

  • Degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Controls, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Hands-on experience deploying robotic automation in a manufacturing or assembly environment.
  • Strong robot programming and integration skills, such as with FANUC, KUKA, ABB, Universal Robots, or similar systems.
  • Experience with industrial controls, including PLCs, motion control, I/O, and safety systems.
  • Experience designing end-effectors, fixtures, and tooling in CAD and taking them through fabrication.
  • Working knowledge of machine vision and sensor integration for guidance and inspection.
  • Software ability in Python, C++, and/or ROS for control, vision, and system integration.
  • Solid understanding of automation safety standards and safe design practices.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, fast iteration, and end-to-end ownership in a startup environment.
  • Based in or willing to relocate to the San Leandro, California facility; the role is fully onsite.
  • Comfortable working hands-on around high-voltage and high-energy equipment while following strict safety procedures.
  • Ability to lift and maneuver equipment and tooling as needed during cell build-out and maintenance.
  • Occasional travel to other Fuse locations.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations, to comply with ITAR.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience automating assembly of high-voltage, high-energy, or hazardous hardware and familiarity with associated safety requirements.
  • Background in pulsed power, Marx generators, capacitors, high-voltage systems, or fusion/plasma hardware.
  • Experience with heavy-payload handling, precision alignment or metrology, or automated electrical/hi-pot testing.
  • Experience with mobile robots or automated maintenance and inspection in field environments.
  • Experience establishing a new automation function or production line.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deploy robotic capabilities for fabrication and assembly of pulsed-power components, including FDGS, capacitor and switch assemblies (“bricks”), stages, IMG modules, and transmission lines.
  • Build automated assembly, fastening, bonding, alignment, and handling processes for heavy and delicate high-voltage, high-energy parts.
  • Develop robotic workflows for inspection, testing, and preventive maintenance of fielded hardware to reduce manual intervention in high-voltage environments.
  • Design and fabricate custom end-effectors, grippers, tooling, and fixtures for Fuse components.
  • Integrate machine vision, force/torque sensing, and metrology for alignment, quality control, and error detection.
  • Program and integrate industrial or collaborative robots with PLCs, motion controllers, and factory software.
  • Define cell-level architecture, including safety systems, interlocks, material flow, and throughput, and help build production lines from concept to operation.
  • Partner with design engineers on Design for Automated Assembly and provide manufacturability feedback for component design.
  • Establish maintenance, calibration, spares, and documentation practices for reliable, serviceable automation.
  • Help onboard new members as the robotics team grows.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Relocation assistance for roles that require it.
  • Flexible time off with no accrual tracking.
  • Two weeks of paid time off built into the end of each year, subject to team and business needs.
  • Supportive leave of absence policies.
  • Paid leave for new parents.
