About The Position

The primary function of this position is to perform all related repairs and/or maintenance on County roads, bridges, and rights-of-way. This role involves assisting in road, bridge, and drainage repair, shoulder work, and maintaining tools and equipment. The technician will operate machinery like a chipper, cut trees, mow grass, dig trenches, and assist with a VAC truck for storm drain maintenance. Responsibilities also include cleaning up construction debris, driving County vehicles safely, completing paperwork, maintaining a clean and organized work area with proper safety signage, and attending required training and safety meetings. The position requires the use of appropriate safety equipment and may involve working extended hours during natural disasters, with on-call duties during hurricane season. The employee may be required to work in any capacity deemed appropriate during special, emergency, or disaster situations.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED.
3 years minimum of prior related work experience.
Ability to work from guidelines and determine the approach for doing the work.
Ability to perform specific manual tasks utilizing light mechanical equipment such as a vehicle, lawn mower, chipper, or hand tools.
Ability to make decisions that govern activities and behaviors of staff members.
Ability to work with fewer than ten co-workers who are mostly engaged in the same activities.
Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending the legs and spine.
Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture, by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make discrimination in sound.
Kneeling: Bending legs at the knees to come to a rest on the knees.
Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force to draw, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.
Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely in English.
Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly in English.
Visual Acuity: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

Responsibilities

Assists in road, bridge, drainage repair, and shoulder work.
Checks and maintains tools and equipment periodically to ensure proper, safe operation.
Operates chipper; cuts trees.

Digs trenches and drains; assists on VAC truck; vacuums out storm drains.
Cleans up construction debris and work areas.
Drives County vehicles in a safe manner.
Completes appropriate paperwork in the performance of daily duties.
Keeps work area clean and organized and uses safety cones and signage when required.
Attends required training and safety meetings and uses appropriate safety equipment.
Works extended hours during hurricanes and other natural disasters, ON-CALL during hurricane season.
Performs other related job duties as assigned.
In the event of special, emergency, or disaster situations, employee may be required to work schedules other than those for which they are regularly scheduled in any capacity deemed appropriate.
