About The Position

Perform various labouring duties in sidewalk and other concrete construction, maintenance and repair activities. Occasionally operate small, motorized equipment. Provide guidance to Labourer I as required.

Requirements

  • Grade 8 or equivalent.
  • One year's experience in road and sidewalk construction and repair activities, preferably on the job as a Labourer I or equivalent.
  • Valid Alberta Driver's License.
  • Ability to operate various small, motorized equipment or tools (e.g. saws, water pumps, jackhammer), to use various cement finishing and construction hand tools (e.g. pick, shovel, axe) and to maintain tools in good condition.
  • Ability to cooperate with colleagues as a team, to understand and follow instructions and to provide guidance and instructions as required to the Labourer 1's.
  • Ability to exert frequent high physical effort (e.g. lifting cement forms, swinging sledgehammers, shovelling) and to work in fatiguing positions (e.g. considerable standing and bending).
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather and in conditions, which may be noisy, dirty or wet.
  • Ability to exercise care when working near traffic or power lines and when using various equipment and tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of Safety and First Aid Courses is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Construct and repair sidewalks. Check and make appropriate measurements and bring the areas to the required grade by removing excess material. Load, unload and assemble concrete forms. Lift, block and sure forms, by using a sledgehammer and large metal pins, and check forms are installed correctly. Pour cement or concrete of the correct amount, type and degree of wetness into forms. Finish concrete at the correct time with finishing tools (e.g., trowels, cross markers) and brush concrete. Remove and clean forms when concrete is hardened and shovel fill into spaces as required.
  • Experience in giving instruction, training, and providing guidance in concrete duties to Labourer 1’s as assigned.
  • Support site coordination and teamwork, including assisting equipment operators, and liaising with suppliers or contractors when required.
  • Operate tools, small equipment, and light-to-medium trucks to support construction, hauling materials, and pick up supplies as required and record amounts delivered to each site.
  • Ensure proper traffic control, as well employee and public safety at work sites.
  • Perform general labour and seasonal maintenance, such as snow and ice removal, sweeping, debris cleanup, and maintaining clean, safe work sites.
  • Comply with and support health and safety requirements, including use of safe work practices, participation in training, inspections, and incident reporting.
  • Complete related duties as required or as assigned by the Supervisor.
