About The Position

The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting to fill multiple seasonal positions for Roads Labourers. The Roads Labourer 1 performs various labouring duties in the area of roads and sidewalk construction, maintenance and repair activities; as well as some equipment operating. This includes such things as sidewalk/curb construction, laying asphalt, pothole repairs, graffiti removal, line painting, street sweeping operations, crack filling, setting up road closures/traffic control and other miscellaneous duties. Occasionally operates small, motorized equipment. Currently recruiting for Seasonal Roads Labourers, positions including: Summer Student Labourers, General Roads Labourer with some experience, Heavy Equipment Operator with some experience. Resume must indicate the class of Driver's License you have.

Requirements

  • Minimum of Grade 8
  • Valid Alberta Driver's License with no more than 5 demerits.
  • Ability to operate various small, motorized equipment or tools (e.g. saws, water pumps, jackhammer), to use various concrete and construction hand tools (e.g. pick, shovel, axe) and to maintain tools in good condition.
  • Ability to cooperate with colleagues as a team, to understand and follow instruction.
  • Ability to exert frequent high physical effort (e.g. lifting concrete forms, swinging sledgehammers, shoveling) and to work in fatiguing positions (e.g. considerable standing and bending).
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather and in conditions which may be noisy, dirty, wet or cold.
  • Ability to exercise care when working near traffic or power lines, and in using various equipment and tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Class 3 with Q endorsement preferred.
  • Heavy equipment operator experience is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Assist with construction, maintenance, and repair of roads and sidewalks.
  • Load, unload, assemble, secure, remove, and clean concrete forms.
  • Assist with pouring concrete or cement and filling areas after form removal.
  • Break road surfaces, dig holes, shovel gravel, sand, concrete, and hot asphalt.
  • Patch potholes and fill cracks using tar, tar pots, and hand tools.
  • Operate small construction equipment such as packers, rollers, tampers, and pumps.
  • Sweep, rake, or shovel debris, snow, leaves, litter, and loose materials from sidewalks and work areas.
  • Operate small snow blowers or hand sweepers as required.
  • Maintain clean, tidy, and safe work sites during and after job completion.
  • Cut brush and trees as required to maintain roadways and public spaces.
  • Direct traffic in high-use or construction areas.
  • Erect barricades, signage, and fencing to ensure public and worker safety.
  • Repair guardrails and install snow or safety fences as required.
  • Exercise caution and follow safety procedures, especially in active traffic zones.
  • Operate small pumps and physically demanding equipment when required.
  • Occasionally drive light to medium-duty trucks (e.g., one-ton trucks).
  • Haul away old concrete, deliver gravel and dirt, and pick up supplies.
  • Record quantities of materials delivered to job sites.
  • Perform a wide variety of manual labour tasks as assigned.
  • Carry out other related duties as directed by the Supervisor to support operational needs.
  • Comply with all City health and safety policies, procedures, and initiatives.
  • Participate in training, inspections, hazard assessments, meetings, and emergency drills.
  • Follow Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and best practices.
