About The Position

Under the general direction of the Road Department Supervisor, the Road Worker performs a variety of road and garage maintenance activities to support the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of Calhoun County roads year-round.

Requirements

• Completion of a standard high school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Michigan Operators License.
• CDL, Class B with Air Brakes.
• DOT Physical Card.
• Two years driving experience.
• Basic computer skills for work time entry and reporting.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies.
• Physical strength and stamina to perform strenuous manual labor and operate heavy machinery.
• Communication and teamwork skills to coordinate effectively with co-workers, and supervisors.
• Push, pull, carry, bend, twist, stand for extended periods of time, work on arms overhead, and lift items weighing a minimum of 50 lbs.
• Prolonged standing and/or sitting while performing road maintenance.
• Tolerance for working near heavy equipment and traffic.
• Use hands to finger, handle, and feel and/or feet to operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

• Construct culverts, side drains, and road layers.
• Erect, install and maintain steel guardrails.
• Clear brush, cut grass and maintain roads.
• Surface roads, patch potholes, perform chip seal, and fog seal work.
• Install and maintain permanent and temporary road signs, barricades to manage traffic safely.
• Operate and maintain road construction equipment, such as loaders, excavators, skid steers, durapatchers, backhoes and mowers.
• Installing and repairing guardrails.
• Scape and grade gravel roads.
• Follow Daily work assignments and collaborate with supervisors to ensure quality and meet project deadlines.
• Complete daily vehicle condition report (VCR), submit VCR prior to the start of the next day shift.
• Report any vehicle and/or equipment mechanical concerns promptly.
• Install and maintain traffic control devices including cones, barrels, signs, and arrow boards per MUTCD requirements.
• Setup, teardown and monitor work zones.
• Perform traffic regulating duties and responsibilities to maintain safe work environment.
• Inspect and replace all lights and bulbs and sealed beams as needed.
• Check tires, maintain correct tire pressure, change tires and fix flats.
• Grease the truck and change oil.
• Maintain and replace all mud flaps.
• Repair and replace mirrors.
• Replace wiper blades.
• Clean and maintain batteries.
• Change the cutting edges on the underbody scraper and repair all loose or broken bolts and lock pins on the underbody scraper.
• Install, remove, and maintain the salt spreader.
• Install and remove towing hitches.
• Replace all snowplow shoes and blades on snowplows.
• Check, maintain, and change the oil, fuel, air, hydraulic, and water filters.
• Clean to ensure asphalt is removed.
• Assist mechanics with equipment for winter maintenance preparation, when needed.
• Load trucks as required.
• Refuel trucks at the beginning and end of each shift.
• Maintain cleanliness of Road Department garages, yards, equipment, trucks, and parking areas.
• Salt and sand roads and bridges.
• Plow snow from roads and bridges.
• Haul material (gravel, bituminous, etc.).
• Dump and spread material.
• Grade shoulders.
• Cut trees and trim brush.
• Remove roadside trash and dead animals as directed off roads.
• Ability to use tree removal equipment, chain saws.
• Clean culverts.
• Install underground culverts.
• Dig trenches to facilitate proper drainage.
• Perform hand-digging and hand-raking tasks.
• Work collaboratively with others and independently when required.
• Drive on snow- and ice-covered roads.
• Respond promptly to emergency road situations.
• Attend required meetings.
• Follow all MIOSHA and Calhoun County Road Department safety standards, policies and procedures.
• Maintain a positive attitude and professional interaction with the public.
• Perform Other duties as assigned by supervisors, management and senior management.
• Electronically punches in and out for each work shift and records all job tasks using an iPad, ensuring accurate entry in the time-and-attendance system and work order system as required.
