About The Position

The Department of Public Works is accepting applications for the position of Road Maintenance Supervisor. There are currently two vacancies in the Department of Public Works. Under the direction of a Road Maintenance Manager, Road Maintenance Supervisors serve as a first line working supervisor with responsibility for overseeing a small crew involved in road maintenance and road construction activities. Road Maintenance Supervisors are responsible for the overall quality and quantity of work produced by their assigned crew, training crew members so they have the necessary skills to do the job, facilitating efforts to improve work methods and encourage crews to "work smarter and not harder", creating a positive motivational environment for the crew, and ensuring that high quality customer service is provided.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of weights and measures.
  • Ability to foster teamwork and service excellence through example.
  • Ability to organize, plan, lay out and coordinate the work of a small group of people.
  • Ability to supervise, train, evaluate and instruct subordinate personnel.
  • Ability to use personal initiative to analyze and solve problems.
  • Ability to read and interpret simple plans and specifications and transfer grades from survey stakes.
  • Ability to enforce common safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare clear and comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to work with basic arithmetic computations.
  • Ability to work effectively and courteously with the public and with co-workers.
  • Ability to bend, stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment (50 lbs. min.) and supplies (50 lbs. min.) used in the course of the work, such as jackhammers, pumps, piping and paving materials.
  • Meet U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol testing requirements and standards for holder of a commercial driver license.
  • Four years of experience in road maintenance and construction work.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid California-issued Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tank vehicle endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, coordinate, direct and participate in road maintenance and construction activities as part of a crew within an assigned area.
  • Supervise, train, evaluate and instruct a small group of subordinate personnel.
  • Investigate and resolve citizen complaints and prepare reports of findings and actions taken.
  • Read and interpret plans, transfer grades from survey stakes.
  • Administer a safety program by ensuring employees' compliance with safety practices and procedures.
  • Administer departmental policies and procedures.
  • Provide input to manager on disciplinary matters.
  • Coach and mentor staff.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
