About The Position

This is a semi-skilled light automotive and construction equipment operator position. The employee is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all light road construction equipment utilized by the Road Department. The employee must perform all duties with minimal supervision. Employee may be required to work irregular hours, attend job-related meetings, and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • 2 years’ experience operating light duty equipment.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in English.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to write clear concise reports.
  • Able to operate and maintain assigned equipment in a safe and hazard free manner.
  • Must be knowledgeable of all traffic laws and regulations.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.
  • Must be able to maintain an acceptable attendance record, be punctual and meet established deadlines.
  • Employee is subject to random drug and alcohol testing per Federal DOT guidelines.
  • Ability to lift up to 60 lbs. occasionally (i.e. up to one-third of work day), from ground to waist level.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. frequently to constantly (i.e., from one-third up to entire work day), from ground to shoulder level.
  • Ability to sit up to five hours at one time, and to ten hours total per day.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk up to five hours at one time, and up to ten hours total per day.
  • Ability to climb in and out of equipment cabs at least twenty times daily at estimated height of six to seven feet.
  • Ability to crouch, kneel, and remain in a prone position for up 30 minutes at one time, and up to one-third of work day.
  • Ability to bend at waist and twist/rotate waist if necessary for up to one—third of work day.
  • Ability to push/pull arms with a force of up to 5 lbs. for up to four hours at a time, and seven and one-half hours total per day.
  • Ability to push/pull with arms with a force of up to 50 plus lbs. while performing labor work.
  • Ability to use hands and wrists to screw/unscrew oil caps and filters and operate manual grease gun as part of maintenance routine.
  • Ability to maintain balance while climbing in and out of equipment cabs.
  • Ability to push with legs up to 40 lbs. of force to operate foot controls for up to five hours at one time, and ten hours total per day.
  • Ability to twist/rotate legs in operating foot controls.
  • Ability to use hands and fingers to grasp/manipulate levers and steering wheel in a bilaterally coordinated manner.
  • Ability to coordinate use of hands and eyes in operation of equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from a vocational college in equipment operation may be substituted for two years of experience.
  • Verifiable road work experience and CDL driver experience.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a variety of equipment including: front-end loader, dump truck, water truck, pick-up truck tractor, brush hog, backhoe, power broom, service truck, pneumatic roller, tandem truck, forklift and steel wheel roller.
  • Performs routine servicing and preventative maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Prepares and submits required reports to supervisory personnel.
  • Repairs, constructs, scrapes, cleans, and fills a wide range of County-owned hard surface and dirt roads and ditches.
  • Removes snow from county-owned roads when warranted by weather conditions.
  • Digs, grades, and places culverts and cattle guards at various property entrances, or under County-owned roads.
  • Mows weeds and picks up trash when indicated.
  • Hauls and removes dirt and gravel from County-owned roads.
  • Repairs, places, and installs traffic control devices as directed.
  • Uses tank truck to wet down dusty or hard road surfaces.
  • Patches hard road surfaces.
  • Performs temporary assignments beyond general duties to enable employee to gain skill and experience to become eligible for advancement.
  • Must know and understand County Personnel Policy and all county departmental policies pertinent to the position.
