About The Position

This is a full-time, year-round job for Churchill County, involving the construction and maintenance of County roads and bridges. The role requires operating various construction equipment and performing manual labor. The work schedule is four 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday, 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM, offering work-life balance and the satisfaction of seeing tangible results from hard work. The county is seeking individuals willing to perform a range of duties beyond just driving trucks, contributing to the community's infrastructure.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Three (3) years of experience in road and/or bridge construction and maintenance, including carpentry/concrete construction; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Knowledge of methods and materials used in general building and above ground and underground infrastructure maintenance and repair work.
  • Knowledge of methods and practices of pavement maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of operation and capability of various truck/trailer combinations and heavy construction equipment.
  • Knowledge of techniques of cement construction, pouring and finishing.
  • Knowledge of use and maintenance of hand and power tools related to the work.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and ordinances applicable to equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of safety principles, practices and equipment related to the work.
  • Knowledge of basic record keeping practices.
  • Skill in practicing safe work procedures and practices.
  • Skill in performing construction and maintenance work, individually or as a member of a crew.
  • Skill in operating a variety of construction equipment skillfully and safely.
  • Skill in driving a variety of vehicles skillfully and safely.
  • Skill in adjusting and performing preventive maintenance on the equipment to which assigned.
  • Skill in recognizing potentially hazardous situations on the job site and taking appropriate action.
  • Skill in safely using and maintaining hand and power tools related to the work.
  • Skill in reading and understanding a variety of plans and maps.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate records of work performed.
  • Skill in working without close supervision in standard work situations.
  • Nevada Class A Driver’s License with tanker, doubles and triples endorsements.
  • Must successfully pass a thorough background check.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug testing.
  • Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Mobility to work in a typical maintenance setting, including operating typical construction equipment, hand and power tools and standard office equipment, and to drive a motor vehicle to various work sites.
  • Stamina to stand, walk and climb and to work in confined or awkward spaces for an extended period of time.
  • Strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds with proper equipment.
  • Vision to read printed materials.
  • Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over a radio or telephone.

  • Applicants who do not possess a current CDL will be considered and, if selected, would be required to obtain a Class A CDL within 6 months of employment.

  • Flagger and work zone safety certification within six (6) months of date of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Constructing and maintaining county roads by performing manual labor and operating equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, dozers, backhoes, pneumatic and steel drum rollers, street sweepers, asphalt/concrete saws, bucket/aerial lift trucks, crack sealing machine, asphalt zipper, end dump trailers, belly dump trailers (trains), snow plows and sander trucks.
  • Performing crack sealing, patching potholes, building and repairing bridges, erecting signs and fences.
  • Performing skilled work in the construction, repair and maintenance of the County’s transportation infrastructure.
  • Performing preoperational and safety check of the equipment before use.
  • Repairing and maintaining paved and unpaved roadways to include, but not limited to, crack sealing, pothole patching, hot mix paving, chip seal paving, asphalt cutting/removal, shouldering and debris removal.
  • Building, repairing, and replacing structures to include, but not limited to, wood, steel, and concrete bridges and culverts, guard rails and cattle guards.
  • Operating a variety of heavy/light construction equipment, semis, and vehicles.
  • Forming, pouring, and finishing concrete to include curb/gutter, bridge decks, culvert and bridge extensions, walkways, cattle guards and driveway approaches.
  • Installing temporary traffic control devices for work zones to include, but not limited to, signs, barricades and cones; performing flagging operations; ensuring safety of workers and the public.
  • Performing skilled work, but not limited to, maintenance, repair and installation on a wide variety of traffic control devices.
  • Preparing, modifying, and moving signs as specified by work orders.
  • Trimming and removing trees along roadways and right-of-way; operating, but not limited to, bucket/lift truck, industrial wood chipper and chain saws.
  • Performing field surveys based on plans/diagrams by setting stakes and checking elevations.
  • Using a variety of power equipment and hand tools.
  • Hauling materials to job sites using a variety of trucks and trailers.
  • Performing minor adjustments and preventive maintenance and reporting the need for major maintenance or repair.
  • Ensuring that tools, equipment, safety devices and materials required for the job are loaded prior to moving to the job site.
  • Operating the County gravel plant and cone crusher as required.
  • Securing equipment upon completion of the work.
  • Maintaining basic logs and records related to work performed.
  • Responding to emergency call out as needed.
  • Participating in emergency preparedness and response actions.
  • Representing the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
