The RN will provide inpatient medical-surgical nursing care. The role requires at least one year of medical-surgical experience and includes titrating heparin, Bumex, and Lasix drips; cardiac drip titrations are not required. Common patient diagnoses and needs include pneumonia, UTI, altered mental status, GI bleed, alcohol withdrawal, and falls or weakness. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:5–7 on days and 1:6–8 on nights. There are 4–5 patient care technicians on each shift. Respiratory therapists administer breathing treatments and inhalers, perform ABGs, and manage respiratory equipment such as BiPAP, CPAP, and high-flow oxygen. RNs typically monitor respiratory care; RT performs equipment checks. A monitor technician on level 5 reads and monitors telemetry for patients on telemetry and calls nurses if there is a monitor problem. Nurses are not expected to read or interpret telemetry. The RN may be floated to other medical-surgical, medical-surgical telemetry, or IMC units to care for lower-acuity patients.
