The VICU RN is a technology-based nursing role requiring strong communication, mentoring, and critical-thinking skills. The nurse works independently, uses available resources, collaborates across professions, and builds trusting relationships with the patient-care team through a customer-service-oriented approach. Duties include monitoring ECG rhythms and pressure waveforms; assessing patients using the electronic health record and other available means; anticipating steps to reduce the risk of patient decline; using high-quality cameras to conduct nursing assessments; communicating frequently with bedside care providers and the VICU provider; and mentoring and supporting staff in unfamiliar tasks or situations. The RN may also identify differences in standards of practice across the system to help improve the program and clinical practice. Conflict-resolution skills are needed to maintain trusting relationships during intense situations. Under the ANA scope of practice, the RN uses the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and discharge while incorporating patient- and family-centered care principles. Under the direction of the Nurse Leader and in accordance with Corewell Health policies and procedures, the RN provides quality patient care, recognizes the effect of nursing care and patient/family partnerships on outcomes, incorporates patient and family input and goals into care planning, develops teaching strategies, and documents education and learning in the health record. The position is based at Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and is part-time on the night shift. Scheduled hours are 12 per week, with work hours of 7 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.; days and weekend frequency are variable.
