About The Position

Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience and providing access to world-class health care in America’s heartland. This PRN RN position is for the Detroit Lakes Family Medicine clinic. Clinic hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, with no nights, weekends, or holidays. This role involves helping to cover shifts for vacations, leaves, and sick call-ins. The primary function is to answer patient inquiries over the telephone, assess the severity of their symptoms and medical needs using triage algorithms, and guide them to the appropriate level of care. The role also includes scheduling patient appointments, documenting triage information, and maintaining triage protocols. Patients' healthcare information must be kept updated. Inquiries may be handled through various technological methods depending on the department, and patients will be educated based on their calls.

Requirements

  • Currently holds an unencumbered RN license with the State Board of Nursing where the practice of nursing is occurring and/or possess multistate licensure if in a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.
  • Nurses performing nursing practice over the telephone require licensure in the states where the patients being served reside.
  • Within first 30 days of employment, all requirements to obtain license needed for role is completed.
  • Obtains and subsequently maintains required department specific competencies and certifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program preferred, including, but not limited to, American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), and National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA).
  • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing preferred.
  • One year of healthcare experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Answers patient inquiries over the telephone, assessing the severity of the patient's symptoms and medical needs according to triage algorithms.
  • Guides the patient to the appropriate level of care; schedules patient appointments over the phone with appropriate healthcare providers/facilities/physicians.
  • Documents information provided to patients during triage in health record systems; records patients health conditions for follow-up patient care.
  • Maintains and develops triage protocols; ensures patients' healthcare information is updated on time.
  • Educate patients based on calls that come in.
