About The Position

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has a unique combination of education, research, and clinical programs that encourages and supports teamwork and diversity. The operating room registered nurse (OR RN) provides direct patient care throughout the perioperative process, including the preoperative, intraoperative, and immediate postoperative phases. This role requires the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for surgical patients while maintaining a safe and sterile environment. OR RN collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical technologists, and other perioperative team members to coordinate care before, during, and after surgical procedures. The OR RN works collaboratively with patients, families, surgeons, anesthesia providers, and perioperative staff to deliver comprehensive, individualized surgical care.

Requirements

Associate’s degree in nursing, Diploma RN.
Must be a graduate of an accredited RN nursing program
Minimum of 1 year of Registered Nursing experience
Valid Registered Nursing License
BLS (Or obtain within 30 days of hire)
Ability to follow oral instruction, read and write
Basic computer skills
Excellent communication skills
Strong work ethics and accountability
Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment.

Nice To Haves

Preferred bachelor's degree in nursing
Orthopaedic experience
1-year Operating Room experience (preferred in Orthopaedics)
Scrubbing experience
Current BLS
EPIC

Responsibilities

Conduct preoperative assessments and verify patient identity, procedure, consent, and surgical site.
Develop and implement individualized perioperative plans of care.
Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and the surgical team to ensure safe, efficient procedures.
Monitor patient status throughout the intraoperative phase and respond to clinical changes.
Maintain a sterile surgical environment, including surgical counts, specimen handling, and proper patient positioning.
Administer medications, IV fluids, and blood products according to established protocols.
Serve as the patient advocate and ensure adherence to patient safety standards.
Provide patient and family education related to surgical care and recovery.
Delegate tasks appropriately and support a collaborative, perioperative team environment.
