About The Position

This is a position for supervisory coverage of the Nursing Department. Responsibilities require knowledge of hospital and nursing policies, allowing independent judgment in their interpretation. The House Supervisor duties included provision of managerial and clinical links between the staff and the Chief Nursing Officer in his/her absence, and the administrator-on-call. Participates in the department’s performance improvement activities. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required
  • Registered Nurse currently licensed by the State of Texas or other compact state
  • Current BLS required
  • ACLS, PALS (or ENPC) and TNCC required but can be obtained within the first 12 months of employment
  • Five years of nursing experience required including Acute Care, Telemetry, and Emergency Department nursing
  • General knowledge of electronic equipment, computer hardware, and software
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar
  • Possesses skills of active listening, critical thinking, oral comprehension, and time management

Responsibilities

  • Assists ACNO with nurse staffing, including the onboarding / discipline / termination process.
  • Assists with nursing staff performance evaluations, including monitors of attendance of mandatory trainings, medication scan rates and medications errors.
  • Assist with the orientation of new employees on shift and with competency evaluation and in meeting training needs.
  • Assist ACNO with managing the nursing schedule, assisting nursing staff to self-schedule as needed and ensuring shifts are covered through PRN or overtime once all full and part time staff have self-scheduled.
  • Maintains, approves, and reviews nursing payroll including ED and Charge Nurse hours and OP float hours.
  • Assists with Annual Skills Fair, including identification of education needs, development of the fair, and checkoffs for staff.
  • Assists ACNO with the development of departmental job descriptions, policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Assists with call rotation for nursing administration, including staffing needs throughout the shift in relation to patient census and staff call-ins and call coverage for non-business hours.
  • Assists with monitoring quality assurance for the nursing department including ED/Trauma through patient chart and quality audits. Reports findings as needed to the appropriate department.
  • Acts as resource for nursing staff, including assisting in nursing care when needed, responding to Code Blue; obtaining supplies from Central Supply and medications from Pharmacy after hours; and solving administrative/operational problems.
  • Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
  • Attends hospital committee meetings and represent the nursing department as assigned.
  • Covers Cardiac Rehab as assigned, including patient assessment, exercise supervision, monitoring patients’ telemetry and reporting/addressing cardiac issues as identified, and required documentation.
  • Keep professionally current by attending continuing education programs, seminars, and workshops.
