About The Position

At Stony Brook Medicine, our Registered Nurses are critical members of the team who diagnose and treat responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques such as case finding, health teaching and counseling. Our valued team members provide care supportive to our patients' health and well-being, while adhering to a medical regimen. The RN Supervisor (Clinician) functions as the nurse leader of a unit on a given shift. In addition, this position may provide individualized direct patient care utilizing the skills and knowledge relevant to the care of such patients. This position provides supervision to the Registered Nurses and ancillary personnel and reports directly to the Nurse Manager.

Requirements

  • At least two (2) years post-licensure acute care experience in nursing.
  • Graduation from a National League of Nursing Accredited School of Nursing.
  • BCLS certification required.
  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in New York State.
  • As part of the onboarding process, we require a copy of your current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Only licensed nurse experience in an acute care facility will be counted towards experience.
  • Must be physically capable of safely executing the duties and responsibilities required of the position.
  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of experience in area of specialization is preferred.
  • Bachelors degree is preferred.
  • Unit specific specialty certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assumes Charge RN role on unit.
  • Provides first level supervision to nursing staff.
  • Offers feedback regarding staff performance and initiates disciplinary action if warranted.
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for the delivery of nursing care to all assigned patients.
  • Develops the initial nursing assessment and interdisciplinary plan of care within eight hours of admission.
  • Reviews or revises nursing assessment and interdisciplinary plan of care according to changes in patient’s condition at a minimum of every 24 hours.
  • Prepares daily patient care assignments based on the individual patient needs and the capabilities of the nursing staff members as evidenced by their credentials.
  • Administers medications and treatments to patients according to the specific orders of the responsible physician.
  • Provides documented evidence in the medical record of patient/family teaching and their responses and understanding of the teaching.
  • Ensures that patient education and instructions are consistent with that of the physician or designee.
  • Assumes preceptor role in orientation of nursing personnel and students on the unit.
  • Provides written documentation to nursing leadership of achieved competencies by the oriente according to the standard of care for the unit/service.
  • Renders direct patient care in selected instances serving as a role model, teacher, or resource person.
  • Demonstrates evidence of advanced, current knowledge and skill in the clinical management of patients within the specialty area.
  • Monitors the quality of nursing care rendered and the documentation of the nursing process through direct interaction with nursing staff members and their assigned patients and families.
  • Completes yearly evaluations and competencies of nursing personnel in a timely manner in collaboration with nurse manager.
