The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children is an 11-bed unit caring for critically ill children from birth through age 18. RNs work closely with nurse practitioners, pediatric intensivists, and a multidisciplinary care team to provide acute care. The unit offers a progressive educational program for staff entering pediatric critical care, including monthly physician-led in-services. The PICU RN cares for children and adolescents with life-threatening or high-acuity conditions requiring constant monitoring. The nurse assesses patients with respiratory, cardiac, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, orthopedic, endocrine, and neurologic dysfunction; identifies care needs and priorities; and plans and delivers safe, age-appropriate care in critical situations. Care includes titrating drips, performing multiple technical procedures, and using a variety of acute-care equipment. The RN evaluates patient responses and progress toward expected outcomes, remains accountable for care outcomes during the assigned shift, and strives for clinical and service excellence.
