About The Position

The RN Staff Nurse Outpatient reflects Northwestern Medicine’s mission, vision, and values, follows its Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with applicable policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards. The registered nurse is a clinically competent professional who prescribes, delegates, and coordinates nursing care for acutely ill patients through assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. The nurse interacts effectively with patients, their significant others, and healthcare team members while maintaining professional nursing standards. The role uses critical thinking, therapeutic communication, and relationship-building skills to improve team effectiveness, processes, and patient outcomes across the continuum of care.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Nursing required for new hires after 01/01/2011.
Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.
One year of experience in a similar role.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is not required in Outpatient Oncology departments.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is not required in Outpatient Oncology departments.

Three years of experience in a similar role.

Responsibilities

Collect and analyze data, identify expected outcomes, develop and implement individualized plans of care, coordinate care delivery, and evaluate progress toward outcomes.
Direct care and determine the appropriate utilization of assistants involved in direct patient care.
Involve patients and families in their care, including teaching, continuity of care, and discharge planning.
Perform patient care in a manner that optimizes safety and reduces the likelihood of medical or healthcare errors, incorporating National Patient Safety Goals.
Assess and reassess pain, use appropriate pain-management techniques, and educate patients and families about pain management.
Provide effective hand-offs to the next healthcare provider.
Assume required on-call assignments.
