Responsible for hospital operations when administration is not present. This role provides leadership for nursing units and other hospital departments during disaster situations. The coordinator reviews staffing needs, organizes and directs personnel, investigates and resolves administrative problems, and offers input into staff evaluations. They coordinate educational offerings, respond to and critique crisis situations, supervise staff, and assist in monitoring nursing unit budgets. The role also manages human resources, safety, and risk management issues, and assists in the implementation and evaluation of nursing initiatives. The coordinator is highly visible, rounding with charge nurses and others, and rounding on patients and families as needed. They serve as a role model for service recovery and encourage front-line partners to participate in this process. Additionally, they coordinate patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, serve as incident commander during disaster operations, and participate in preparedness education and nursing leadership sessions. The RN Shift/House Coordinator acts as a resource for staff, physicians, and other hospital personnel, assists with complex patient care, counsels in times of crisis, and accesses appropriate resources. They may also assist with organ procurement, completion of death packets, coordinating emergency procedures, and procuring necessary supplies and medications. The role requires adherence to hospital policies and values.
