RN (Registered Nurse)

First Connect Health•Bismarck, ND

About The Position

The RN will provide care on a 31-bed MedSurg/Oncology unit serving adult and geriatric patients. Common patient diagnoses include stroke, hypertension, COPD, cellulitis, CHF, atrial fibrillation without RVR, chest pain, MI patients after ICU, altered mental status and behavioral conditions, and some telemetry and surgical overflow cases. The unit also cares for oncology patients; core staff are responsible for chemotherapy, and there is currently no oncology provider in-house during the day. The nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4–5 on days and 1:5–6 on nights. Nurses are required to titrate drips, including Lasix and heparin. A charge nurse is available on each shift as a resource, generally without an assignment unless staffing requires it. Nurse aides/patient care technicians are available at a 1:8 ratio. Telemetry packs and a monitor technician are used; RNs are not required to read or interpret strips. RNs may encounter stable BiPAP patients and established tracheostomies with blow-by oxygen. Shifts are 0700–1930 and 1900–0730. The manager makes the schedule; block scheduling may be considered if unit needs are met. Weekend work is required every other weekend, and holidays are required as needed. There is no call or standby requirement. Nurses may float to other MedSurg units, occasionally to ER holds, and may float to telemetry, where a telemetry RN handles strips. Nurses do not float to mom-baby. Orientation consists of 1–2 shifts on the floor. The unit describes its culture as supportive, collaborative, and family-oriented. The role requires profile review and a manager interview. The posting states a 50-mile radius rule and specifies that candidates may not be full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, including CHI and Dignity. Requested time off must be submitted upfront and is limited to 7 or fewer days per 13-week contract; additional time off will not be approved, including after submission.
