About The Position

This position is Full time FTE: 1.0 (80 hrs/per pay) 7:00 p.m.-7:30 a.m M-F No Weekends Three (3) years of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse is required (please show this on your application). Works as a multidisciplinary medical team within the scope of the Michigan State Nurse Practice Act to be an expect in all aspects of vascular access care. The Vascular Access Team (VAT) nurse has responsibility and accountability for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of vascular access sites. The VAT nurse will deliver care based on defined standards of patient care and evidenced-based practice, while supporting the organizations' mission and vision. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior. Works under the direct supervision of a Nurse Manager, House Director or designee who assigns areas of responsibility and review results for compliance with established standards. May direct and coordinate the work of professional and ancillary personnel providing nursing care to patients.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • One year Critical Care experience.
  • Successful completion of Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Current Michigan license as a Registered Nurse.
  • Proficient at placing IVs or good baseline of starting IVs with proficiency by 6 months.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of Nursing theory and practice, skills, and judgment.
  • Excellent communication and critical thinking.
  • Ability to apply nursing techniques to specific needs.
  • Ability to work well independently without direct supervision.
  • Ability to collect and maintain data.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective and harmonious working relation with patients, family, physicians, support staff, other Medical Center employees, and the general public.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred two years of Vascular Access experience.
  • PICC training to begin within 4 months of accepting position and certification by 9 months.
  • Required to become Vascular Access Board Certified within two years of joining the team

Responsibilities

  • Has responsibility for the insertion of peripheral inserted lines (PIV), midlines and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) access using ultrasound technology while maintaining current infection prevention practices related to vascular access devices (VAD).
  • Responsible for evaluating line appropriateness, necessity and type, as well as monitoring infusion related outcomes.
  • Provides assessment skills, clinical expertise, support, and education for staff nurses, ancillary staff, patients, and families related to VAD.
  • Obtains vascular access in patients using most appropriate device. (PIV, Ultrasound guided PIV, Midline, PICC).
  • Educates all healthcare professionals on line maintenance, complications, removals and trouble shooting of vascular access devices.
  • Monitors line durations and completes line maintenance, catheter removals and trouble shoots VAD as appropriate.
  • Collects and maintains data for quantitative and qualitative statistical analysis; e.g., gauge program effectiveness, evaluate for future staff education.
  • Evaluates data and presents results to Vascular Access Committee.
  • Participates in policy and procedure implementation, evaluation, and interpretation regarding Vascular Access.
  • Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react competently, and treat (if appropriate) unique needs of patient age groups served.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Utilizes new technologies or improvements that relate to job assignment.
  • Maintains evidence-based expertise by attending conferences, obtaining CEUs, or is an active member of Vascular Access Professional organization(s).
