About The Position

This position is for a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Obstetrics (OB) department, working on a per diem basis. The role involves providing care to obstetrical patients, newborns, and GYN patients. The nurse must be knowledgeable in growth and development, labor and delivery procedures, newborn care, and post-partum care. Responsibilities include patient assessment, administering medications, patient and family education, documentation, and assisting physicians. The nurse will also be expected to delegate tasks, participate in staff orientation, and potentially work in other nursing areas (Med/Surg, ICU, ER) as needed and qualified. Flexibility with schedule and job duties is expected.

Requirements

Graduate of an approved school of nursing.
1-2 years professional OB/GYN experience.
Possesses, or is willing to acquire, the special knowledge needed to safely care for patients and/or newborns in the OB/GYN unit including labor and delivery, post-partum, nursery, and clean GYN patients.
Must complete annual EMTALA education and annual MSE education.
Ability to establish effective working relationships with physicians and other professional staff.
Currently licensed as an RN by the Indiana State Board of Nursing.
CPR certification.
ACLS certification (within one year).
NRP certification (within one year).
FHM certification (within one year).

Responsibilities

Assess, treat, and/or care for the obstetrical patient and the neonate.
Possess knowledge of growth and development of the obstetrical patient and the neonate.
Understand the range of treatment needed by the obstetrical patient and the neonate.
Understand and comply with IC policies and procedures at all times.
Follow the course of patient’s labor, recognize deviations from normal, and take appropriate action.
Recognize signs of fetal distress during labor and alert physician when necessary.
Assist physician in resuscitation of the newborn.
Perform examination in absence of the physician recognizing station, dilation, and effacement of the cervix.
Notify physician of progress, so he/she is in attendance at the delivery.
Explain procedures to patient and family.
Record delivery in appropriate log.
Understand and exercise proper technique in caring for the newborn.
Administer proper dosages and apply acceptable techniques when giving medication to the newborn.
Assess mother’s knowledge of care and feeding of the newborn and initiate appropriate instruction.
Ensure that all required testing is performed on all infants before discharge or that arrangements have been made to have the test completed.
Obtain complete information from mother or family member for birth registration of newborn.
Give instruction to post-partum patient in caring for her physical needs during hospitalization and after discharge (perineal care, rest, exercise, resumption of normal activities).
Accurately initiate and complete all forms pertaining to patient care.
Maintain patient record.
Accurately and legibly transcribe physician orders and input to order entry.
Complete all documentation legibly and follow hospital policy for signatures, dates, and timing of events.
Properly delegate necessary activities to other members of the healthcare team as their abilities or level of education dictates.
Participate in orientation of new staff.
Refer appropriate problems to House Supervisor, Director/Asst. Director of Patient Care Services and contribute to the resolution.
Support hospital and nursing policies and decisions.
Promote harmonious working relationship within unit and with peers.
Use equipment and supplies in a safe, efficient manner.
Clean and return equipment to proper storage.
Works in other areas of nursing services including Med/Surg, ICU and ER as needed and as qualified, performing duties including – but not limited to hourly patient rounding, vital signs, glucometer checks, baths, IV starts, documentation.
Coordinate/assist in maintaining unit and patient room tidiness.
Notify other agencies and disciplines as necessary to facilitate coordinated patient care.
Participate in QI/PR activities and committees as assigned.
Stay current with advances in nursing.
Support department by demonstrating flexibility with schedule and job duties.
