The RN Patient Educator - Diabetes is responsible for evaluating and assisting patients, their significant others, and families in acquiring clinical information and education. This role utilizes established principles of teaching-learning theory and life-style counseling, individualizing instructions for persons of all ages while incorporating their cultural preferences, health beliefs, and learning styles. The position adheres to the Standards of Practice for the field of specialty, develops, reviews, and updates educational information for patients and staff, and evaluates patient's/family's response to education, treatment, and health services provided. The RN Patient Educator also serves as a resource to nursing staff, nursing students, other health care personnel, and the community, incorporating new techniques and knowledge acquired through continuing education and evidence-based practice. Strong critical thinking and interpersonal communication skills are essential, as is the ability to document patient assessment, education, learning barriers and interventions, and patient response to education.
