Plans and administers professional nursing care to patients in the recovery room/post-anesthesia care unit. Cares for surgical patients as they recover from anesthesia. Monitors vital signs, such as heart or respiratory rate, blood pressure, or oxygen level. Comforts patients as they wake; may be required to gently restrain patients. Checks surgical site for excessive bleeding or swelling. Monitors, documents, and communicates care given, patient's status and reactions to interventions. Educates patients on care for the surgical wound or other post-discharge care. Performs work under minimal supervision. Handles complex issues and problems and refers only the most complex issues to higher-level staff.
