About The Position

This position is located in the Lourdes Hospital Cancer Center and is used to cover hours during the week (8-6) and on weekends (8-12). The Oncology nurse provides professional, comprehensive nursing care for patients and is responsible for the delivery of coordinated, safe, compassionate, therapeutic, and evidence-based quality care. This role practices in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act in the state of employment, the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics, and the ANA scope and standards of practice.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited nursing program.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of employment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Specialty training as required by specific units or specialty includes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of two years of practice as a registered nurse in an acute care setting is preferred.
  • A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
  • Specialty certification is recommended as soon as the RN is eligible including: Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Certificate and Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN).

Responsibilities

  • Employs Nursing Professional Practice by assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patients’ care.
  • Develops updates and coordinates patient plan of care to achieve patient goals.
  • Optimizes patient outcomes and helps patient transition across the care continuum.
  • Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate.
  • Performs and maintains essential competencies as required by the department.
  • Administers chemotherapy, antibiotics, blood and iron infusions and any other therapeutic treatments.
  • Follows provider orders in relation to patient care and documents interventions.
  • Advocates for patients to promote a safe and quality patient care.
  • Provides ethical and holistic care by partnering with other health care providers within and outside of the department.
  • Facilitates learning environment for patients to educate them on disease processes and treatments.
  • Educates patients on the care being provided to them and the treatment plan they are prescribed.
  • Provides patients with the education material needed to ensure health literacy.
  • Other duties as assigned.
