5 South is a 30-bed Oncology unit located within Butterworth Hospital. This unit specializes in the care of those with oncology diagnoses and a surgical population of head and neck cancers. The scope of work involves delivering nursing care responsibly and accountably as described professionally by the American Nurses Association (ANA) and legally by the State of Michigan. This includes demonstrating competency through the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation) and upholding the standards of professional performance as described by the ANA (ethical practice, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice and research, quality of practice, professional practice evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health). The unit focuses on running central lines, administering chemotherapy treatments, and providing oncology education to patients. Longer patient stays are common, allowing the team to build relationships with patients and their families. The unit offers a variety of patient conditions in addition to cancer, providing continuous learning opportunities. Teamwork on this unit is outstanding, with members assisting each other, creating a welcoming and warm atmosphere. 5 South welcomes new graduates and experienced healthcare professionals, offering opportunities for continued learning and skill growth.
