About The Position

This position is for a Registered Nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Carle Health. The NICU cares for extremely preterm infants, term babies, and critically ill infants, offering a wide range of acuity. The role requires excellent assessment skills, critical thinking, and a passion for educating patients and families. The unit has 48 beds, including 23 Level 3 and 25 Level 2 beds. Patient diagnoses include prematurity, hypoglycemia, transient tachypnea, respiratory distress syndrome, feeding difficulties/delays, medication withdrawal, and whole body cooling. The typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:1 to 1:3. The unit is fast-paced with medically complex patients, emphasizing strong communication and supportive teamwork among all team members and with family members. New and experienced team members collaborate to drive new patient care initiatives and promote a culture of inclusion. Frequent nursing skills and equipment used include IV insertion, NG/OG insertion, strong assessment skills, and medication administration.

Requirements

  • Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within 1 year - American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Nursing Diploma
  • RN >1yr NICU experience

Responsibilities

  • Performs all responsibilities and duties required by unit as specific to the scope of service.
  • Implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice.
  • Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team.
  • Completes initial assessment upon patient admission and develops appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards and that is based on patient and family needs.
  • Implements plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures.
  • Modifies plan of care based upon continuous evaluation.
  • Takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents.
  • Communicates with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues.
  • Offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers, and confers with colleagues to expand knowledge base.
  • Identifies own learning needs and takes initiative to begin appropriate solution.
  • Fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies.
  • Monitors intake and output of neonatal patient assignment.
  • Assists mothers with breastfeeding initiation / baby friendly care.
  • Administers medications using proper bar code scanning.
  • Report on patient assignment during multi-disciplinary rounds.
