It also involves knowledge of age-related patient care protocols for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. The navigator may act as a liaison between providers, clinics, insurance, inpatient floors, and outside facilities, requiring strong interpersonal and communication skills. The role involves coordinating, facilitating, and negotiating with others, monitoring patient responses, and working closely with ancillary and support services. Problem-solving, identifying process improvements, and facilitating groups and multidisciplinary teams are also key aspects of this position. The nurse navigator functions within the scope and standards of nursing practice as outlined by the Nurse Practice Act and the American Nurses Association.
