The Big Rapids Campus features a 22-bed medical-surgical unit and a 4-bed critical care unit, offering an ideal environment for new nurses to gain experience and advance their careers. The diverse patient population primarily consists of hospitalist medicine patients with various diagnoses such as pneumonia, COPD, cellulitis, kidney failure, and bowel obstructions. This allows for the development of acute care skills including IV placement, chest tube management, and NG tube placement/management. The critical care unit frequently admits high-acuity patients with conditions like sepsis, hyperglycemia, and respiratory failure, requiring management of medication drips (e.g., insulin, vasopressors) and the use of equipment such as ventilators and BIPAPs. Big Rapids boasts a cohesive team that collaborates effectively with an interdisciplinary group including hospitalists, care managers, social workers, pharmacy, nurse techs, physical therapists, and occupational therapists to ensure quality patient care. Experienced RNs work alongside the education team to provide a supportive onboarding experience for new hires and graduates. Scheduling is managed through a six-week rotating core, allowing for advance planning of appointments and promoting work-life balance.
