This position is for a Registered Nurse (RN) on a Medical Oncology Specialty Unit. The unit has 30 beds and serves patients aged 18 and older. The nurse to patient ratio is typically 4-6 patients to 1 RN. The department offers support from the Oncology Nursing Society, including education and resources, an Active Department Shared Governance, and a Mentor/Mentee Program for new graduates and those pursuing Oncology Nursing Certification. Frequent nursing skills and equipment used include an oncology skill set (inpatient chemotherapy and radiation), palliative and end-of-life care, and general medical patient care. Responsibilities include performing all duties required by the unit, implementing procedures and theories related to the practice area, maintaining accurate documentation, completing initial patient assessments and developing care plans based on patient and family needs, implementing and modifying care plans, ensuring patient and employee safety, communicating effectively, offering constructive feedback, identifying learning needs, and fulfilling departmental competencies. Specific patient care duties include head-to-toe assessments, starting IVs, inserting NG tubes, dressing changes, administering medications, inserting Foley catheters, accessing and maintaining Mediports, and administering Chemotherapy/Biotherapy throughout the hospital. The role also involves providing emotional support to patients and their families.
