The Medical Observation Unit is a 54-bed medical unit where patients are admitted from the Emergency Department for observation secondary to insurance requirements. Conditions include mental status changes, long term placement needs, pain, cardiac issues, TIA, rule out CVA, UTI, pneumonia, geriatric care, and behavioral issues. Patients meeting criteria for a higher level of care will be transferred to the appropriate progressive or inpatient unit. Staff complete assessments and shift documentation according to the Observation documentation policy. This unit experiences rapid patient turnover, with staff potentially completing 1-4 discharges, transfers, and assessments during a 12-hour shift. Royal Oak Hospital is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a top hospital in Michigan and the country, serving as a major academic and referral center with Level I adult and Level II pediatric trauma designations. It has achieved Magnet designation four consecutive times and houses Michigan’s first Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence. The RN, utilizing the ANA scope of practice and the nursing process, provides professional nursing care incorporating patient-family centered care principles. This includes assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and discharging patients. The RN delivers quality patient care under the direction of the Nurse Leader, adhering to Corewell Health policies and procedures, and recognizes the impact of nursing care and patient/family partnerships on outcomes. The RN collaborates with patients and families, incorporating their input and goals into the plan of care, and develops and documents patient/family teaching strategies.
