The RN provides professional nursing care guided by the ANA Standards for Professional Nursing Practice and Code of Ethics. The position involves assessing patients, developing and implementing individualized care plans, administering medications and treatments, monitoring and documenting patient status, and coordinating with physicians and other healthcare clinicians. The RN educates patients and families about illness management, recovery, and home care; directs and delegates appropriate care tasks to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides; and supports the development of colleagues and students through precepting and competency support. Nurses with direct responsibility for stroke patients must know stroke symptoms and warning signs, applicable protocols and pathways, NIHSS, stroke alert procedures, stroke quality indicators, and available patient education materials and community resources. The RN promotes safe, effective, culturally relevant, family-centered care and contributes to improved patient experience, clinical outcomes, and a healthy work environment.
