About The Position

The Registered Nurse - Lactation Support Specialty applies the nursing process to the care of patients within the RN scope of practice as defined by the Oregon State Board of Nursing. This role involves teaching patients and significant others, documenting patient care in the medical record, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to effectively coordinate overall patient care. Requirements

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Oregon
American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS)
Able to read, write legibly, and converse effectively in the English language.
Exhibits critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Flexible, able to prioritize and adapt to rapidly changing patient and unit needs.
Demonstrates effective teaching skills.
Responds effectively to patient crisis/emergency situations
Proficient in use of computer, including accessing internet, word processing, and documenting in an electronic medical record system.
Maintains regular, consistent, and punctual attendance

Nice To Haves

Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred
National certification in lactation or perinatal area preferred
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Provider card or obtain within 6 months of hire
Recent (within past 5 years) acute care hospital experience preferred
Acute hospital maternal-child nursing experience preferred

Responsibilities

Provides specialized lactation education and hands-on support to breastfeeding mothers in the postpartum period.
Develops personalized lactation plans tailored to individual patient needs/preferences and provides resources for ongoing support.
Serves as a resource for colleagues, providing guidance and education on best practices in lactation.
Conducts lactation consultations as needed.
Identifies learning needs of the mother and the family unit.
Conducts follow-up phone calls with postpartum patients to assess recovery, identify patients requiring additional follow-up care, and help facilitate referrals to appropriate providers/community resources.
Communicates findings to providers and other members of the healthcare team.
Assesses inpatients as appropriate to the scope of care, including physical, psychosocial, learning needs and barriers, age/culture needs, and discharge planning.
Establishes nursing diagnoses based on assessments and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
Plans and updates the plan of care according to identified diagnoses and needs.
Implements and performs individualized care based on the nursing care plan, which may include assisting with activities of daily living, medication administration, physical assessments, pain management, and operation of biomedical equipment.
Assists physicians and other licensed, independent practitioners with invasive and non-invasive procedures.
Teaches patients and their families about current illness, medical tests, medication, general healthcare, illness and disease prevention, and wellness promotion.
Provides appropriate assignment, supervision, and direction to unlicensed assistive personnel.
Provides interdisciplinary coordination and facilitation of overall care.
Documents patient assessments, interventions, care, and teaching in the electronic medical record or paper format as necessary, ensuring documentation is complete, concise, timely, and legible.
Evaluates care provided and communicates patient status and results of care to the interdisciplinary team.
Performs other duties as assigned.
