About The Position

The Birth Place at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center is an 18-room Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum unit providing family-centered care for over 1,000 births annually. As a four-time Magnet-designated facility, we uphold the highest standards of nursing excellence, guided by AWHONN best practices and supported by the OBIX Perinatal Data System for continuous fetal monitoring. Staffed 24/7 by board-certified Obstetricians and Certified Nurse Midwives, our multidisciplinary team—including RNs, LNAs, Health Unit Coordinators, lactation consultants, and pediatric and obstetric providers—delivers compassionate, expert care in a seamless environment that includes a Level II Special Care Nursery with Mass General-affiliated Neonatologists. We promote ongoing education and certification in fetal monitoring, neonatal resuscitation, and obstetric emergency management to ensure safe, personalized care for every family. As a member of the Patient Care Services team, the Lactation Consultant assesses, develops, and implements a culturally appropriate plan of care to support the breastfeeding patient. This role communicates in an open, positive, and therapeutic manner with patients, their families, and the healthcare team.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • Current NH licensure as a Registered Nurse
  • Must have IBCLC

Responsibilities

  • Participate in development of breastfeeding handouts, protocols and education for staff and parents.
  • Make appropriate referrals to support the patient’s desire to breastfeed (i.e. breast pump rental or Durable Medical Equipment providers).
  • Incorporate age-specific, developmental needs, prevention strategies, and education into plans of care.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to resolve inpatient and outpatient breastfeeding issues.
  • Provide outpatient lactation consultations and telephone guidance to families.
  • Participate in gathering of statistics, chart reviews or other activities to improve the quality of Lactation Services.
