The 3 CE Outpatient Hematology/Oncology Clinic of the Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (Wilmington, DE) provides comprehensive outpatient services to children and families with hematological and oncological diagnoses. Services include diagnostic workups, physical exams, IV insertion, central line care, medication and chemotherapy administration, blood product administration, emergency care, lumbar punctures, pheresis services, pre- and post-bone marrow transplant patient care, and initiation of hospital admissions. The clinic operates Monday-Friday with varying hours. Nurses work collaboratively with providers and the interdisciplinary team to assess, plan, and initiate care for patients with a variety of principal diagnoses including anemias, leukemias, solid tumors, lymphomas, and genetic blood disorders. The nursing team aims to provide high-quality care, coordinating patient care and evaluating outcomes based on departmental policies and multidisciplinary plans. Nurses must be competent in chemotherapy, biotherapy, and bone marrow transplant patient care, maintained through ongoing education. Patient care is delivered in the clinic and infusion center, with a minimum of two nurses staffing the Day Therapy area for safe patient care delivery. The Synergy model is used for patient care assignments. One nurse is assigned to a Phone Triage position daily to handle patient and family calls regarding treatment, medications, and side effects, providing education and anticipatory guidance.
