About The Position

The 1E Med-Surg/Observation Unit at St. Anthony Hospital, a Magnet® designated hospital, is a 22-bed department that manages a high volume of patients monthly. This unit uniquely combines observation (14 beds) and inpatient (8 beds) status patients. Observation beds are utilized for patients requiring further assessment from the Emergency Department (ED) or those not suited for extended ED stays. The primary diagnoses managed are chest pain and abdominal pain, with admissions also accepted from surrounding free-standing EDs. Patients requiring care beyond 24-48 hours are transitioned to inpatient status. The department's mission is to provide safe, quality, and timely care. Many team members are drawn to this unit due to an interest in emergency medicine, offering a valuable opportunity to enhance med/surg skills, develop time management abilities, and gain a comprehensive understanding of both ED and inpatient care. The role involves caring for diverse patient populations and collaborating with a mid-level provider (PA or NP) on every patient. The team fosters a positive culture and provides opportunities for learning about various disease processes. The department supports team members in achieving their nursing goals, including education and certification. Ideal candidates are open, inquisitive, flexible, able to see the broader picture, and quick learners. This is a fast-paced environment with frequent admissions and discharges, requiring nurses to be adaptable, resilient, and hardworking due to the high patient acuity and workload.
