About The Position

The 1E Med-Surg/Observation Unit at St. Anthony Hospital is a 22-bed department that manages a volume of over 300 patients per month. This unit combines observation (14 beds) and inpatient (8 beds) status patients. Observation beds accommodate patients from the ED requiring further observation, testing, or monitoring. Patients requiring care longer than 24-48 hours are transferred to inpatient status. The unit's mission is to deliver safe, quality care in a timely manner. It's an ideal environment for those interested in emergency medicine, looking to solidify med/surg skills, develop time management abilities, and understand both ED and inpatient care. Nurses will care for diverse patient populations and work alongside mid-level providers. The team is close-knit with a positive culture, offering opportunities to learn about various disease processes and supporting team members in achieving their nursing goals through education and certification. The department is fast-paced, admitting and discharging patients on every shift, requiring nurses to be adaptable, willing to work hard, and able to manage a busy workload. Requirements

  • Associates Degree in Nursing; Nursing Diploma or by endorsement
  • Active and unencumbered RN License in state of employment
  • Medium Work exert/lift up to 50 lbs. force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. frequently, and/or up to 10lbs. constantly
  • One year RN experience

Responsibilities

  • Actively support the department director/manager by coordinating clinical and department activities for the unit.
  • Serve as a vital clinical resource and professional role model.
  • Demonstrate strong clinical judgment.
  • Ensure high-quality care delivery.
  • Act as a crucial link between physicians and the patient care team.
  • Authorize work procedures.
  • Assign duties.
  • Manage as shift charge.
  • Actively take patient assignments based on unit needs and acuity.
  • Promote patient well-being and adhere to professional standards.
  • Assess patient’s physical, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual needs through observation, interview, review of medical records & clinical data.
  • Evaluate patient’s response and intervenes to ensure optimal patient outcome.
  • Develop and implement patient plan of care and observe outcomes in accordance with nursing standards and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Provide leadership, support, and coordination of unit’s daily operations during designated shift.
  • Assist in directing, organizing, and prioritizing all shift activities ensuring patient care and staff needs are met.
  • Ensure appropriateness of admissions/cases to the unit/department and that appropriate staff skill mix exists to provide safe patient care.
  • Serve as a liaison to the multidisciplinary patient care team.
