About The Position

The RN Circulator provides total patient care by utilizing the nursing process and implementing the standards of peri-procedure nursing. This role assumes the leadership role for the operating/procedure room team and the management of the operating/procedure room during the intra-procedure period.

Requirements

Qualified licensed Registered Nurse will be assigned as Circulating RN on each procedure.

Responsibilities

Receives report and room assignment.
Performs hand scrub according to procedure.
Damp dusts horizontal surfaces including tables, equipment, overhead spotlights, and other ceiling and wall mounted equipment using a clean cloth moistened with cleaner/disinfectant or alcohol prior to the first scheduled procedure of the day.
Prepares the room by checking lights, suction, electrosurgical unit, clocks, and other mechanical equipment, and arranges furniture to facilitate the procedure, obtaining additional furniture as needed.
Prepares for the procedure by assisting the Scrub person in opening sterile supplies and instrumentation, removing all additional supplies from the case cart and placing them on the circulating table, assisting the scrub person into gown, performing initial count with the Scrub person and documenting it, and preparing patient equipment such as bovie pad, prep tray, and positioning materials.
Provides patient care including assessing the patient in the pre-procedure holding area, determining additional protective equipment needed, verifying personnel readiness, transporting the patient, positioning the patient, standing by during induction, assisting with patient positioning, turning on and positioning the surgical spot light, placing the electrosurgical ground pad, performing sterile skin prep, assisting with draping, positioning mayo stand, ring stand, and back table, connecting electrosurgical unit cord and suction, turning on the electrosurgical unit and informing the physician of settings, positioning sponge buckets, positioning soiled sponges, providing necessary sterile supplies, monitoring the operative/procedure field for breaks in technique, confining and containing contaminated articles/areas, communicating the need for next patient readiness, initiating closing counts, identifying and labeling specimens, completing procedure nursing records and charge forms, providing dressing material, moving waste and linen hampers, removing ground pad, assisting anesthesia personnel during extubation and emergencies, notifying the recovery area nurse of patient arrival and needed equipment, and assisting in transferring the patient to the recovery area.
Gives report to the recovery area nurse including patient's name, allergies, procedures performed, contributing intra-procedure information, medications given, physical limitations, impairments, pre-procedure level of consciousness, necessary equipment needs, and other pertinent information.
Places x-rays, specimens, and procedure records in designated locations.
Washes hands.
Checks with Administrative Director/designee for changes in case or room assignment.
Proceeds to the pre-procedure holding area to assess the next patient and review chart.
Communicates with team members to determine room status and assists with room cleaning and set-up as necessary.
Communicates room status concerning on-time, delay or early completion with the nurse running the schedule.
Informs the scrub person and anesthesia personnel if it is necessary to leave the operating/procedure room during the procedure.
Discourages unnecessary traffic in and out of the room.
For Cardiac Arrest: Pushes Code Blue button, dials All Page and announces Code Blue and room on intercom, stays in room, signals for assistance, assists physicians and limits traffic in room, and follows Code Blue policy/procedure.
Prepares for the next day by checking the next day's assignment, assembling equipment and supplies, handling questions concerning special requests and routine needs, and checking and restocking supply cabinet, drawers, and anesthesia machine.
