The Registered Nurse (RN) assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the care of all assigned psychiatric patients, coordinating, directing, and participating as an effective interdisciplinary team member. This role involves maintaining professional and technical knowledge, ensuring quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards and regulations, and protecting patients and employees through infection control and medication procedures. The RN documents patient care, maintains continuity among nursing teams, and ensures patient confidentiality. Key aspects include establishing a compassionate environment, promoting patient independence through education, and maintaining a safe working environment. The RN resolves patient problems using multidisciplinary strategies, fosters cooperative relationships among healthcare teams, and contributes to team efforts. Responsibilities also include ensuring equipment operation, managing nursing supplies, and delivering patient care in accordance with the PA Nurse Practice Act and hospital policies. The RN processes psychiatric emergencies, provides for patient safety, manages agitated patients, updates crisis intervention skills, and ensures patient belongings are searched. The role requires a working knowledge of psychotropic medications, administering and monitoring them, and providing patient/family education. Additionally, the RN conducts group therapy sessions and acts as an information/referral source for families.
