About The Position

The 2 CUB Unit at The Heart Hospital is a fast-paced environment caring for high-acuity cardiac and vascular patients, including those with CHF and immediate post-op heart bypass and valve surgeries. This Cardiac Universal Bed (CUB) model allows for care across Telemetry, PCU, ICU, and CVICU levels. Patient ratios are 1:4 for Telemetry, 1:3 for PCU, 1:2 for ICU, and 1:1 for CVICU (immediate post-op or unstable ICU patients connected to specialized devices). The unit has 20 beds and focuses on skills leveling, caring for ICU devices such as Impella, IABP, CRRT, EKOS, and lumbar drains. It is supported by world-renowned surgeons, is a magnet hospital, and has an active Unit Based Council. As a Registered Nurse, you will oversee patient care using a professional practice model, which includes patient assessment, recognizing health issues, creating and evaluating care plans, and assessing patient responses. You will also be responsible for securing patient travel, understanding patient needs, helping prevent issues, following the Texas Nursing Practice Act, and delegating tasks based on patient condition and team competencies.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of strong Cardiac RN experience in ICU or PCU.
  • Graduation from an Accredited Program with a specialized field of study in nursing.
  • Possession of an RN license.
  • Must have BLS certification or obtain it within 30 days of starting in this role.
  • A deep understanding of nursing and patient care standards, as well as procedures.
  • Knowledge of nursing laws, rules, standards, and guidelines in your area.
  • Understanding of hospital procedures and rules.
  • Proficiency in medical terms, focusing on health, disease prevention, management, common medications, and their side effects.
  • Respect for medical and professional nursing ethics and patient privacy rights.
  • Exceptional communication skills, allowing for clear expression of thoughts both verbally and in writing.
  • Positive social skills to facilitate interactions with a diverse range of parties.
  • Excellent problem-solving capabilities, driving effective critical thinking.
  • Basic computer skills, encompassing areas such as Microsoft Office, information security, scheduling and payroll systems, electronic medical documentation, and email.

Responsibilities

  • Educate patients, families, nurses, and community members to empower them with knowledge for better healthcare choices, assessing and documenting learning needs regularly.
  • Work with colleagues and the community to create care plans, delegating tasks carefully and following up promptly.
  • Utilize different strategies for problem-solving with patients, families, and staff.
  • Recognize limitations and prioritize safety, effectiveness, and efficiency in patient care planning and delivery.
  • Achieve goals through teamwork, recognize contributions, commit to growth, and contribute to peers' development and community service.
  • Secure patient travel.
  • Understand patient needs in healthcare and help prevent issues.
  • Follow the Texas Nursing Practice Act and delegate tasks based on condition and team competencies.
