Allegheny General's 6A Stepdown Unit is a 30 bed unit specializing in the care of ICU stepdown patients and complex medical cases. Primarily serving as a receiving unit for patients stepping down from MICU, 6A also admits patients from the Emergency Department, outside hospitals, and smaller ICUs requiring a higher level of care for stabilization. The unit frequently cares for patients with respiratory issues (with respiratory therapy available on the floor), drug and alcohol withdrawal, GI bleeds, altered mental status, sepsis, and congestive heart failure (CHF). Nurses manage a high-acuity patient population requiring frequent blood product administration, intravenous access, and close monitoring. AGH is a Level I Shock Trauma Center with 5 state-of-the-art ICUs and a state-of-the-art Cancer Center, with over 550 beds.
